Penelope Spheeris

Penelope Spheeris has attained a level of respect that has transcended gender-designation and allows her to be recognized simply as one of Hollywood's most talented and diverse directors. The span of her work from mainstream studio comedies (WAYNE'S WORLD) to cutting edge independent features (SUBURBIA) to historically significant documents of youth culture (THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART I, II, and III), have made her an internationally recognized artist. In 1974, she formed Rock 'n' Reel, the first company in Los Angeles to specialize in music videos.

This program includes a selection of her pioneering, rarely-seen videos and curate an eclectic mix of work from today's top music video directors, many of whom, like Spheeris, straddle the worlds of documentary, features, and music videos.

Penelope Spheeris worked as a film editor and cinematographer before forming her own production company, Rock 'n' Reel, the first music video company in Los Angeles, producing and directing music videos for such acts as Funkadelic, Fleetwood Mac and The Doobie Brothers. She directed the critically acclaimed THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION documentary series. Her work spans from mainstream studio comedies (WAYNE'S WORLD) to cutting edge independent features to historically significant documents of youth culture.
