Sheree Farmer is a single mother of six. She has a steady, full-time job. She doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. Her evenings are spent taking care of her children and dreaming of a better life. And more than anything, she wants to get her kids out of their drug-infested, crime-ridden, gang-controlled neighborhood in Newark, NJ.

With the help of Mary Rigby-Abernathy, a former fashion industry executive and cancer survivor who has quit her job to help low-income families become homeowners, Sheree does her best to put together a down payment for a home at Bergen Estates.

Sheree puts her finances in order and attempts to educate herself about the complicated homebuying process. Despite the bumpy road to clearing her credit and qualifying for a mortgage, Sheree seems to be moving forward towards her deadlines. Things seem to be looking up for the Farmer family.

But unfortunately, life gets in the way.

An altercation with her 14-year-old daughter Jalishah results in Sheree's arrest and Jalishah's being placed in her father's custody, despite his drug habit and history of beating Sheree when they were married.

Throughout the film, and up until the very end, it is never clear whether Sheree will get the house and the life she's always dreamed of. Will she get Jalishah back? Can she get her ex-husband out of her life? Can she overcome a lifetime of disappointment and achieve the American dream?
