THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY
Michael Blieden
USA, 2003, 103 minutes
Ah, those crazy Comedians of Comedy.
They riff! They rhyme! They drop their pants and run gleefully through a forest when you least expect it!
Offering a raw, behind-the-scenes look at a group of cutting edge comedians, a documentary crew follows stand-up veteran Patton Oswalt and his fellow "alternative comics" Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford and Zach Galifianakis on the Comedians of Comedy tour.
Their alternative, no-holds-barred take on humor favors personal observation and intellectual humor over more traditional punch-line-driven jokes. Providing an anarchic voice on the comedy scene, the performers seek out nontraditional venues to promote their brand of humor to everyone from college kids to punk rockers.
In the rental van, at comic book stores, and even on the well-manicured front lawn of Posehn's house, this pack of funny friends do their best to make each other laugh--as well as dissect the future of comedy. Backseat and barstool discussions ensue about the challenges of presenting material that's not necessarily appropriate for mass audiences, the horror of the hack punch line, and the differences between playing rock clubs and indie venues rather than the usual comedy clubs.
Hamming it up all the way, this wacky band of lovable clowns travels the country, spreading the gospel of alternative comedy. Along for the ride, we see what makes this talented quintet tick and, lucky us, get our funnybones tickled, too.
