CODE 33

David Beilinson, Michael Galinsky, Suki Hawley, Zachary Werner
USA, 2005, 84 minutes

Given extraordinary access to the inner workings of an active police investigation, the filmmakers take their cameras on a nationwide manhunt for a sexual predator who attacked women as young as 11 and as old as 79 in Miami's Little Havana.

Enlisting the help of forensic artist Samantha Steinberg to create a sketch of the perpetrator, Miami Police detectives Fernando Bosch and Elio "Chills" Tamayo plaster the street with the likeness and stop hundreds of Hispanic men on the streets to obtain DNA samples. The Miami media covers the story, raising public awareness of the case and blasting the police for racial profiling. Community members meet. Guardian Angels hit the streets. Yet the rapist's identity remains a mystery.

After a long, frustrating summer full of dead ends, the task force is dismantled. But Bosch and Tamayo refuse to give up. When hope is nearly lost, another lead emerges--a man who bears a striking similarity to the initial forensic sketch is pulled over on a routine traffic stop, and the case continues.

Capturing the tenuous relationship between the police, the media and the community during a time of crisis, this slick, fast-paced film uses one criminal as a window into the complexities of a tight knit, multiethnic community struggling to understand the horrible crimes taking place in their midst.
