LOOKING FOR VICTORIA, AN ARGENTINE STORY

Ton Vriens
ARGENTINA, 2004, 58 MINUTES

"An entire generation of young Argentines have known only misery in their time. Between the 1976 coup and the brutal military dictatorship that followed, and the harsh economic depression afflicting the country today, this generation finds little reason to place hope or trust in their country's leadership.

Twenty-five-year-old Adriana Lewi is an all-too-representative example. Her parents were among the tens of thousands arrested by the government during the 1970's, and among the 30,000 who never came home-los desaparecidos, the disappeared ones. Only a baby then, Adriana never knew her parents. Now a mother herself, with a son the same age she was when the police more or less left her on the doorstep of her maternal grandparents, Adriana decides to find out more about who her parents were and what happened to them. Interviewing family members, former neighbors, and fellow prisoners of her parents, Adriana pieces together a better picture of her mother and father.

But between uncovering her father's complicated involvement with the radical Montoneros and reopening the rift between her Jewish grandparents and the Catholic grandparents who raised her, this comes at a cost. Questioning whether she wants a life in Argentina, Adriana pins her future on coming to terms with her family's-and her country's-past."
