GUNNAR GOES COMFORTABLE
Gunnar Hall Jensen
NORWAY, 2003, 75 MINUTES
"Gunnar Hall Jensen has never felt right with himself. Even when he shoots this artful video diary of his life on a $25 amateur camera, he narrates in English because he feels he sounds too serious speaking Norwegian. His life is full of beautiful emptiness, from his many girlfriends and horrible infidelities to his slick career as a commercial director. He drinks hard, plays hard, and lives hard. Gunnar is the embodiment of a nihilistic and self-absorbed man that few would care to know, but as you continue to watch and overcome your own discomfort with him, you begin to realize there is a soul beneath that plastic veneer.
Plagued by depression, diabetes and alcoholism, and always searching for greater meaning-any meaning, really-Gunnar travels to the spiritual promised land of many soul searches-India. It is there that he hits rock bottom, yet he soon emerges from the darkness with a new outlook on life.
Gunnar merges an impressive soundtrack with experimental elements that help us experience his transformation with a heightened sense of our own psychological state. GUNNAR GOES COMFORTABLE is a beautiful and honest work of art that could not come from pure self-indulgence. Gunnar peels back his own layers, exposing the ugliness inside. In the end, he does not ask for forgiveness or offer up excuses-he leaves it up to us, as he has already found peace with himself."
