This poignant coming-of-age tale imagines formative events in the life of 14-year-old Oda von Siering (later the accomplished German poet Oda Schaefer) as she returns to Estonia on the eve of World War I. Her father is a slightly deranged doctor and academic, living with his second wife in a dilapidated mansion on the sea. Russian soldiers are a regular presence, protection from dangerous anarchists on the loose. As tensions rise between nations and family members, Oda seeks refuge in the company of a wounded rebel whom she nurses back to health. Beautifully crafted and acted, this film won the Jury Prize for Best Director at the 2010 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Official Selection, 2010 Toronto Film Festival, 2011 Palm Springs Film Festival; Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor, 2011 German Film Awards.
