THE CONQUEST [La Conquête]

"Politics is a stupid job done by intelligent people," says ambitious cabinet minister Nicolas Sarkozy (Denis Podalydes), toiling for aloof, recently re-elected French president Jacques Chirac (Bernard Le Coq, pitch perfect) circa 2002, but with his eyes on the prize for the next election. Director Xavier Durringer's sardonic account of the mercurial current president of France's rise to power, even as his personal life and marriage to wife and political advisor Cecilia (Florence Pernel) suffer, makes for lively political theater, a must-see for Francophile and inside-the-Beltway audiences alike. Official Selection, 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
