BLACK THURSDAY [Czarny Czwartek]

Based on a notorious chapter in Poland's Communist past, veteran director Antoni Krauze vividly recreates 1970s Poland, shooting at several authentic locations and via the skillful use of archival footage. As Brunon and Stefania prepare to celebrate their first Christmas in their new apartment in Gdynia, the price of food skyrockets and threatens to derail the stability they've been working towards. Workers at the shipyard where Brunon is employed go on strike, refusing to return until their wages are raised. When the military gets involved in order to quell a potential countrywide uprising, chaos reigns and lives are lost. FIPRESCI Prize, 2011 Montreal World Film Festival.
