2011 Oscar Selection, Greece

Eros and Thanatos continue their eternal wrestling match, figuratively and sometimes literally, in Athina Rachel Tsangari's loopy, irreverent film about a late-blooming young woman's awakening identity. Marina's (Ariane Labed) life is circumscribed by her depressed, decrepit seaside town and her duty as the main caregiver for her dying father (Vangelis Mourikis). She spends most of her free time with her friend Bella (Evangelia Randou), the two imagining life more than they live it, including practice kissing sessions and impromptu, recurring dance routines. But the time will soon come for Marina and Bella to experience life for real. Best Actress, Ariane Labed, 2010 Venice Film Festival; Official Selection, 2010 Toronto Film Festival; 2011 Sundance and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals.
