PIRATE RADIO [aka THE BOAT THAT ROCKED]
This uproarious ensemble comedy from Richard Curtis (writer-director of LOVE ACTUALLY, screenwriter of FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and NOTTING HILL) follows the misadventures of a boatload of pirate radio DJs in 1966, who broadcast rock'n'roll from an old tanker anchored in the North Sea just outside of UK jurisdiction, in defiance of the BBC's broadcasting monopoly at the time. The motley crew of eccentrics includes courtly station owner/ship's captain Quentin (Bill Nighy), rival DJs The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an edgy Yank, and the visionary Gavin (Rhys Ifans); would-be ladies' man Dave (Nick Frost); and oddball Kiwi Angus (Rhys Darby, THE FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS). In between working hard and playing harder, the lads entertain a boatload of highly motivated music groupies, give Quentin's godson a crash course in the school of rock, and fight the power of the BBC in the person of uptight government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh).
