Former casting director Markus Schleinzer makes his feature debut with a coolly controlled look at a captor and his captive: a pedophile and the 10-year-old boy he keeps locked in his basement. Eschewing thriller and horror genre conventions, Schleinzer takes an unflinchingly observational approach, recording the mundane daily routines, the victim's swings between surliness and Stockholm Syndrome and the villain's meticulous attention to detail and fiercely guarded privacy — cloaked in disarming friendliness and convenient cover stories for family and co-workers. A fascinating exploration of the banality of evil and the depths of a divided personality. Official Selection, 2011 Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Toronto, New York Film Festivals.
