2011 Oscar Selection, Slovakia
A Roma teen is confronted with a Hamlet-like dilemma; after his father turns up dead on the road leading to their village, 14-year-old Adam's world begins to spin off its axis. First, his desperate mother remarries his shady uncle Zigo, who pressures Adam and his brother Marian to assist with his illegal dealings. Then his girlfriend Jolana's family makes moves to pack her off as a mail-order bride for a wealthy foreigner. Topping it all off, the ghost of Adam's father begins to visit him, offering counsel and positing mysterious riddles. Special Jury Award, Special Mention of the Jury (lead actor Ján Mižigár), International Federation of Film Societies Prize and the Europa Cinema Label Award, 2011 Karlovy Vary Film Festival; Official Selection, 2011 Toronto Film Festival.
