THE GIRL [Flickan]
Left in the inattentive care of her layabout aunt while her activist parents travel to Africa as relief volunteers, a ten-year-old girl must navigate the puzzling world around her over the course of a summer in 1980s Sweden. Feeling abandoned by her family, the young girl alternates between lonely, dreamy withdrawal and gravitating to a clique of older neighbor girls, whose bullying ways and prankish behavior offer entertaining but ultimately empty diversion. The debut feature from director Fredrik Edfeldt has a lovely camera subject in young lead Blanca Engström, but the photography of Hoyte van Hoytema, who also lensed LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (part of AFI's 2008 EU Film Showcase), may be the real star of the show. Special Mention, Berlin Film Festival First Feature and Generation Kplus Juries.
