ANDER

The Basque BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN? The debut feature from Spanish short filmmaker Roberto Caston earned enthusiastic plaudits at this year's Berlin Film Festival for its carefully observed, drolly comedic tale of a reserved, fortysomething sheep rancher in the Spanish Basque country who awakens to strange new desires after he hires a young Peruvian ranchhand. Ander (Joxean Bengoetxea) runs the family farm with his mother and sister. When he breaks his leg in a freak accident, Ander hires ranchhand Jose (Christhian Esquivel) to help out, and the two men's friendship begins to grow into something more. Caston plays the eruptive events and cultural clashes for gentle, winning comedy, and the wonderful cast shines in this crowdpleasing film. CICAE Award, 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
