ALMANYA – WELCOME TO GERMANY [Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland]
A surprise hit at the German box office this past spring, Yasemin Samdereli's debut feature, co-scripted with her sister Nesrin, is both a breezy culture-clash comedy and a genuinely heartwarming, intimate epic about a Turkish-German family's history. In an effort to answer his grandson Cenk's question, "Am I German or Turkish?" grandfather Hüseyin decides all three generations of the Yilmaz family should make a trip together to the old country. Cross-cutting between Hüeseyin and his young family's migration to Germany in 1964, and the now much-expanded brood's road trip in the current day, Samdereli delivers a clever crowd-pleaser fit for all ages.
