[Mistérios de Lisboa]

Raúl Ruiz's masterful adaptation of the 19th-century Portuguese novel by Camilo Castelo Branco. The core story centers on a boy named João, growing up in an orphanage. In time, Joao will learn his true identity as the bastard child of an ill-fated romance between two members of the aristocracy who were forbidden to marry. He will spend a lifetime unraveling the fascinating story of his parents and the multitude of characters whose fates, shifting fortunes and multiple identities overlap and intersect over three decades, a procession of adventures and escapades, coincidences and revelations, sentiments and violent passions, vengeance and love affairs, across Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, all the way to the Americas. Official Selection, 2010 Toronto, New York, San Sebastián (winner, Best Director), São Paulo, Vienna, London and Torino Film Festivals.
