108 [Cuchillo de Palo]
On a quest to discover her uncle Rodolfo's hidden past, filmmaker Renate Costa uncovers surprising truths about her family as well as Paraguay's difficult history in this autobiographical documentary. Never having set foot in her uncle's house until he was found dead, Renate pieces together a portrait of his life through the uncertain memories of neighbors, friends and family. As a gay man under the oppressive dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, Rodolfo was forced to keep secrets, persecuted, and even jailed and tortured for his lifestyle. As the truth unravels, Renate realizes that reconciling the past doesn't come without consequences. Official Selection, 2010 Berlin Film Festival; 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival.
