CUBA MEMORIES OF OVERDEVELOPMENT [Memorias del desarrollo]
In person: director Miguel Coyula & producer David Leitner!
A companion piece to Tomás Gutiérrez Alea's 1968 classic, MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT, and similarly adapted from a novel by Edmundo Desnoes. An intellectual leaves the Cuban revolution and "underdevelopment" behind only to find himself at odds with the ambiguities of his new life in the "developed" world. A character study of a loner with no clear-cut politics or ideology. A stranger in a strange land struggling with old age, sexual desire and the impossibility of the individual to belong in any society. The film's narrative form is a collage of flashbacks, daydreams and hallucinations blending live-action, animation and newsreel footage to suggest the way personal memory works, subjectively and emotionally. Official Selection, Havana Film Festival in New York (Winner, Best Film), 2010 Sundance, Cine Las Americas and LA Latino Film Festivals.
