Shot solely from the point of view and narrated by an unseen geologist as he makes his way across the arid plains of northeastern Brazil on an assignment to assess water canal routes from the area's only river. As Jose Rentato drives deeper into the harsh and barren landscape meeting the families who will be displaced for the project, his thoughts turn to the wife, who recently deserted him, as his thoughts and behavior become increasingly desperate and erratic. Longing for his wife and a home to return to, Jose must come to terms with what lies ahead.
