SPAIN
BORN TO SUFFER [Nacidas para sufrir]

Miguel Albaladejo's gentle comedy-drama finds fertile comic ground poking fun at the tradition-bound ways of a Spanish village as residents are confronted with problems unique to modern life. After her sister dies, 72-year-old Flora (Petra Martínez) is visited by her three nieces, who encourage her to give up her house and move into a nursing home. Unwilling to sacrifice her home or independence, and intent on preventing her ungrateful nieces from getting their hands on her property, the wily Flora takes advantage of Spain's recently liberalized marriage laws to marry her faithful housekeeper, Purita (Adriana Ozores). But Flora's scheme sets into motion a new series of comic twists and turns. Official Selection, 2010 Berlin Film Festival.
