From producer Tom Hanks, this clever college comedy set in 1980s England blends tart humor with emotional warmth, not unlike a John Hughes film rewritten by Nick Hornby, and with better music (the outstanding soundtrack includes The Cure, Buzzcocks, Smiths and New Order). Working-class kid James McAvoy (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) wins a scholarship to university, but more importantly, the first alternate spot on the school's University Challenge quiz show team. Immediately distracted from his studies by college life, the promise of quiz show stardom and the attentions of both rich girl Alice Eve and spirited activist Rebecca Hall, McAvoy learns some surprising lessons about life and love.
