PAVEE LACKEEN: THE TRAVELLER GIRL
[Pavee Lackeen]

Photographer Perry Ogden's directorial debut is set among the Travellers of Ireland, an itinerant community, like the Roma elsewhere in Europe, with many of the same problems stemming from poverty. Blending fact and fiction, Ogden gets great performances from real Travellers, all nonprofessional actors, and many scenes have an observational, documentary feel. The narrative focuses on 10 year-old Winnie, whose natural inquisitiveness is at odds with the strictures of school and her precarious home life, where she, her alcoholic mother and siblings are crammed into a dilapidated trailer on the outskirts of Dublin.
