In this acclaimed adaptation of the beloved Finnish novel, Peter Franzén returns crippled from WWII-with undeterred idealism. Director Markku Pölönen was born in Eno, Finland, in 1957. His use of the vast and beautiful Finnish countryside as a setting has become a successful theme in his films. Pölönen has won numerous Jussi Awards (Finnish National Film Award) including Best Direction in 1996, 1999 and 2005 for THE LAST WEDDING, A SUMMER BY THE RIVER and DOG NAIL CLIPPER, respectively.
