CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE [Le Consequenze dell'Amore]
In this existential, nearly surreal thriller, Mafia accountant Toni Servillo has lived for the past eight years in a hotel room. He made a disastrous investment years ago, so his bosses stuck him with this dreary and lonely assignment laundering money in a nondescript Swiss town. He wiles away his days in quiet desperation at the hotel bar, speaking to no one. But then barmaid, Olivia Magnani, (granddaughter of Anna) arouses a long-forgotten passion in him. An unforgettable performance by stage actor Servillo; Adriano Giannini (son of Giancarlo) adds another familiar name to the cast. Winner of five Donatello Awards, including Best Film, Director, Actor, Screenplay and Cinematography, out of 10 nominations.
DIR/SCR Paolo Sorrentino; PROD Domenico Procacci, Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima and Angelo Curti. Italy, 2004, color, 104 min. In Italian with English subtitles.
Director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino was born in Naples, Italy, in 1970. His first feature-length film, L'UOMO IN PIU, also featured actor Toni Servillo and was awarded the Made in Italy-Rai International prize from the Solinas Awards (1999).
