AFI Life Achievement
Award: George Lucas
Friday, July 1 through Thursday, July 14
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ..."
Accompanied by John Williams' striking score, this
now legendary scroll introduced to the world an evil
empire, a heavy-breathing villain and a ragtag
band of freedom-fighting rebels before fading into
the infinite space beyond. It was 1977 and George
Lucas, best known at that point as the creator of the
futuristic THX 1138 and the nostalgic smash hit AMERICAN
GRAFFITI, launched a cultural phenomenon.
With its fusion of epic myth, sci-fi wonder, special
effects and old-fashioned good vs. bad guys storytelling,
STAR WARS captured the imagination of
adults and children alike. As Lucas is honored with
the AFI Life Achievement Award and the final STAR
WARS installment unspools this summer, AFI Silver
proudly showcases the full body of his work, including
rare public screenings of the five previous STAR
WARS films--the first three re-mastered with digital
effects--as well as the entire INDIANA
JONES trilogy, produced by Lucas and
directed by Steven Spielberg.
