Tomas Alfredson (LET THE RIGHT ONE IN) directs an all-star cast in this new adaptation of John le Carré's 1974 Cold War spy novel, previously the source of 1979's BBC miniseries. The feature stars Gary Oldman, who brings a watchful intensity to the role of British intelligence vet George Smiley, a patient and prudent technocrat. Forcibly retired from the Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, Smiley is unexpectedly summoned back and briefed on the presence of a mole among MI6's leadership. The suspects are narrowed to striving Percy Alleline (Toby Jones), suave Bill Haydon (Colin Firth), bullish Roy Bland (Ciarán Hinds), shifty Toby Esterhase (David Dencik) and Smiley himself. With the mole still at large, the emotional and physical tolls on the players enmeshed in the deadly international spy game will only escalate. The mole's trail remains cold until maverick field agent Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy) unexpectedly makes contact...The cast also includes Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Graham, John Hurt, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Simon McBurney and Mark Strong. Official Selection, 2011 Venice Film Festival.
