AFIFEST 2007 November 1-11

Who Are These People
(And What Are They Doing Here?)

Your job title is Box Office Manager - but who are you really? I'm a festival carney. I move from festival to festival working various box office jobs. It's a hectic life but I really enjoy it. I love papercuts. I love printing and folding tickets for will call. I enjoy googling demotivational phrases and posters, printing them out and placing them on my employees desks. And I love sneaking booze into my office.

Job titles aren't very descriptive, and the festival would obviously fall apart without you. What do you really do around here? I oversee the fest ticketing and registration. I'll be the first to admit it's not a glamorous part of the fest, but oh I do love the power of printing tickets. People who realize this power, smart people, often bring me gifts to try to weasel their way into a sold out screenings. I love being showered with presents... a bottle of wine, a delicious pizza, pretty flowers, an Amoeba gift certificate. Anything really.

Why do you work for AFI Fest? See above! What's your favorite thing about the fest? The tent's fun, I love my co-workers, but I'm really here for the swag. I need more bags that you can put makeup in or pens or makeup pens. I live on sample hair care products and lip balm throughout the year. I'm stock piling T-shirts and ball caps with logos of companies and movies. I like free magazines. The only thing that bothers me is getting a voucher for free hotel rooms in locations I could never afford to fly to.

What's one movie you are really looking forward to? Every year I look forward to seeing the Shorts Programs. They are so creative and inspirational. I also kinda have ADD so it helps that they are usually under 20 minutes.

After this is all over, what's the first thing you're going to do? Well, we'll load out the tent, I'll finish out the box office reports and then it's on to the next festival. I know I should slow down and take a break but I just can't. It's part of my carney nature

Your job title is Associate Director, Programming - but who are you really? In my other life I'm a writer/ actor/filmmaker/performance artist. I studied with Spaulding Gray and I love a good story. I live with my boyfriend and our cat Jonah in Silverlake, CA but I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Job titles aren't very descriptive, and the festival would obviously fall apart without you. What do you really do around here? I watch movies all summer long, this year we had 4,300 submissions so I didn't get out much

Why do you work for AFI Fest? I love films and film festivals, I started at the US film festival the precursor to Sundance taking tickets when I was in high school and I got addicted. AFI FEST rocks; we're an international film festival in the heart of Hollywood.

What's your favorite thing about the fest? I love the whole thing but most of all I love the films. I love the video art on the rooftop village in the Cinema Lounge - it's awesome to spend 10 days celebrating moving images. I love seeing five films and then having a drink on the rooftop talking about them.

What's one movie you are really looking forward to? That's impossible! It's like asking a mother to choose her favorite child! David Lynch is a big influence on me so I'm thrilled to show the documentary LYNCH. I love all the Latin films - they are so strong! We had amazing films from Mexico this year. I love all the political films, the documentaries are great! I love band Sigur Ros, the doc about the band is amazing!

I love them all.

After this is all over, what's the first thing you're going to do? Sleep and celebrate my birthday Nov. 13th!
