DAY EIGHT                NOVEMBER 8, 2006
A Guide to Recognizing Your Volunteers

By Paula Paige
AFI Volunteer

Behind the scenes, a dedicated volunteer corps runs the machines of AFI FEST 2006 presented by Audi, as tens of thousands of filmmakers and film lovers come together for 12 days.

Stephanie Thomas, a six-year veteran of AFI FEST, says this festival is her "favorite one," and "the most organized," allowing flexibility so she can work her full-time job and still feel part of the excitement.

By day, Thomas is an employment specialist. She finds jobs for people who suffer "barriers to employment," such as those who have spent time in the welfare system or are considered too old for the work force.

To celebrate 20 years of AFI FEST, Thomas works with the publicity team on galas and special events.

Thomas says she remains "respectful of stars' territory," and is professional in their presence.

Thomas takes her "real-life" job skills to the festival, encouraging friends to volunteer as she "motivates people to do things and step outside of their boundaries."

AFI FEST is a "perfect venue" to expand horizons and garner new skills, she says.

An aspiring filmmaker, Thomas is near completion of her first feature and hopes to be walking, instead of monitoring, the red carpet at a future AFI FEST.

The experienced AFI volunteer encourages rookies to "be there and be available."

She understands that during festivals people are often under stress and recommends, "Take a breath!" And remember to have fun.
