MONICA

ROUND EYES IN THE MIDDLE KINGDOM
(U.S. 1995 53 min.)

China as the Communist revolution spread, one Caucasian resident who stayed was a Russian Jew who joined Mao's revolution. In this fascinating rarely seen period in China, the filmmaker (whose own family opted to leave China for the U.S.) uses extensive archival footage and photos to attempt to reconcile his own comfortable, colonial childhood with the famines and suffering that led to the Chinese revolution. Plays with SUPERIOR PEOPLE (U.S., 1996 50 min.) Most people fly over America's heartland and think that nothing is there. I wanted to present an accurate picture of family farming and life in a small American town... to give a face to the impending doom of the lifestyle upon which this country was founded.—Frank Leupold
