LUMIERE AND COMPANY
(France/Spain/Sweden, 1995 90 min.)

A lively tip of the hat to the pioneers of the moving picture, this is an anthology of short pieces by 40 contemporary filmmakers—including Peter Greenaway, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Wim Wenders, and Zhang Yimou—who made their own "Lumiere" films with a restored camera that once belonged to the Lumiere brothers. The filmmakers were required to work according to the same conditions under which the Lumieres made their films one hundred years ago: the sequence could not exceed the 52 seconds of film, could not use sound, and could not be artificially lit.
