Tribute to
ANJELICA HUSTON

Anjelica Huston has brought her compelling presence to some of the most memorable performances of the times and has recently extended her artistry to the direction of her own film. Raised in Ireland as part of a renowned cinema family (her grandfather was the actor Walter Huston, and her father the director John Huston), Anjelica Huston made her motion picture debut at the age of fifteen in A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH, a medieval romance directed by her father. Following a role in Tony Richardson's Broadway production of Hamlet, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she appeared in such films as THE LAST TYCOON and THIS IS SPINAL TAP. It was her 1985 portrayal of sly, love-lorn Maerose in PRIZZI'S HONOR, however, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the respect of critics and moviegoers worldwide. She continued to challenge herself by tackling the emotionally demanding role of Gretta in THE DEAD (which received two Academy Award nominations) and as Martin Landau's desperate, neurotic mistress in the acclaimed CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, an uncharacteristic part which indicated the breadth of her range. In 1989, she received her second Academy Award nomination for her role as Ron Silver's long-vanished wife in Paul Mazursky's ENEMIES, A LOVE STORY. This was followed by yet another Academy Award nomination for her searing portrayal of Lily Dillon in THE GRIFTERS, directed by Stephen Frears. In 1995, Huston starred opposite Jack Nicholson in THE CROSSING GUARD, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. A versatile artist, Anjelica Huston has also exercised the dark, forceful persona which made her famous to great effect in such quirky, comedic outings as THE ADDAMS FAMILY and MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY. Her most recent role has been as director of BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh (screening at this year's AFI Fest). Based on the novel by Dorothy Allison, it is the story of a young girl's struggle in the 1950's South to survive a world of emotional and physical violence. The film will air this December on Showtime.
