HAMSUN
(Denmark/Sweden/Norway/Germany, 1996 160 min.)

During World War II, Norwegian Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun openly supported the Nazi party. When Norway is occupied by the Nazis, Hamsun (a towering performance by Max von Sydow) urges his countrymen to lay down their arms. Considered a traitor by his fellow Norwegians and rendered more and more isolated in his political dealings, Hamsun loses sight of the consequences of his actions. Director Jan Troell (Il Capitano) has created a controversial drama which explores the intricate relationships between art, personal history, politics and love.
