MONICA
THE EMPEROR'S SHADOW
(China/Hong Kong, 1996 116 min.)
Chinese costumers finally
come of age with this gorgeously accoutered chunk of
history with a script and performances that are masters
rather than slaves of the setting. In 210 B.C. Ying
Zheng, the first emperor of a united China, weary from
a life of war-mongering, is haunted by the memory of
Gao Jianli. Ying and Gao were both suckled by Ying's
mother, with Ying growing up to be the ruthless one
and Gao a talented musician. Gao is captured and brought
before Ying, who desperately wants his childhood buddy
to compose an anthem for the Qin dynasty's final victory...
Derek Elley, Variety. Also on 10/29.
