The titular character of Zhou Xiaowen's film is a hard-working woman who sells her home-made noodles by the roadside in a rural town. Her husband is ill, and her small son spends much of his time at the neighbor's house, watching their coveted television. When the neighbor's husband offers to drive her into town, suggesting that she'd earn more money there, she jumps at the chance. She sets out with determination to purchase the largest television set she can get. "Ermo is a most ordinary Chinese woman...I love Ermo because she's selfish and honest." ‹Zhou Xiaowen.
