A TRIBUTE TO
CIBY 2000:
SECRETS AND NO LIES
CEO JEAN-FRANÇOIS FONLUPT will candidly discuss the secrets behind the success of CIBY 2000, a company that has elevated the marriage of quality and commerce into an art form.
Ciby 2000 was founded by French construction tycoon Francis Bouygues a mere six years ago and has already produced over thirty features. The Parisian company could not be considered guilty of chauvinism: Besides the enormously popular actor-director Gérard Jugnot, one can find in this mini-major's stellar stable such filmmakers as David Lynch (with Twin Peaks and Lost Highway), Pedro Almodovar (with High Heels, Kika and The Flower Of My Secret), Jane Campion (with The Piano), Emir Kusturica (with Underground), and Mike Leigh (with Secrets and Lies). The foresight Ciby 2000 has displayed in its production choices was underscored by the three Palmes d'Or these last three titles received at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. It is no surprise that Jane Campion and Mike Leigh found a home with this mini-major: Its Production Consultant, Pierre Rissient, was responsible for bringing Jane Campion's short student films (and consequently Sweetie) to the Cannes Film Festival, which brought her instant recognition, and for the French theatrical release of Mike Leigh's first feature, Bleak Moments, in 1972. Ciby's daring and far-reaching support of art films is evidenced in their productions of Peruvian Francisco Lombardi's Sin Compasion and Iranian Abbas Kiarostami's Through the Olive Trees. Pierre Rissient will also be present to introduce Lino Brocka's Bona, having been the driving force behind the international recognition of the late director.
