(Philippines, 1981 83 min.)

From the late director Lino Brocka, the Philippines' best known director. Bona is an 18-year-old woman of a lower middle class family in the Philippines. Young and romantic in the midst of the poverty and hardship around her, she follows a handsome young actor named Gardo home, only to witness him being beaten by a group of men. Bona takes him home and cares for him, but is promptly beaten by her father upon her return home the next day. Gardo on one side, her father on the other, Bona struggles to maintain love and dignity in a world that presents her with few choices.
