ACROPOLE
(Greece, 1995 130 min.)

A richly textured, often enthralling tribute to the celebrated Acropole theater, which in the '50's and '60's entertained Athenians with its Ziegfeld-style musical extravaganzas, significant because it was popular not only with the well-to-do, but also with members of the working class who appreciated the bawdy political satire. Pic's plot deals with that old standby of the putting-on-a-show musical, the replacement of a leading performer with someone less experienced. (Director Pantelis) Voulgaris allows the plot to be swamped by the musical numbers.. these sequences are great fun, and lovers of Greek music and song will have a great time.David Stratton, Variety.
