1000 JOURNALS Out there in the world, 1000 ways

By MICHELLE PASTER, Daily News Managing Editor

Documentary filmmaker, Andrea Kreuzhage, a Munich native, Los Angeles locale, has tact for molding multiple artistic platforms into a cinematic story. She tells the story of a man who goes by the name of "Someguy" in San Francisco who purchased 1000 blank journals and sent them out into the world, stamped with his return address. People from 35 different countries wrote and produced art inside these journals, returning only 25 of the original journals. Some guy tracked his experimental and highly instrumental act via the Internet in an attempt to make the world a smaller place.

After sending Someguy a film treatment, having found him through his 1000 Journals website, Kreuzhage knew she absolutely had to do everything it took to produce and direct a documentary on this proactive character. She hails from a background in independent television and film producing, running her own production company, but this is her documentary directorial debut.

Kreuzhage explains, "I was confronted with decisions I never had to make before in my life; it was an amazing process, yet nerve-racking of course."

Her reenactment sequence of Someguy placing journals around town depicted him so naturally, it felt as if she was filming him during the time in reality of his first step of the journal project. He puts them in a public outhouse, on a public telephone stand, and even in a boutique alongside books lining the shelf.

As far as the work/life balance goes for Kreuzhage, as an artist, it's a life decision, not a job choice. She comments, "If the lifestyle were a convenient 9-to-5 job, I wouldn't go to the extremes to chase these projects." And extremes she does. She even sold her Los Angeles house to pay for the film against her attorney's advice. "I will not recommend this. I wrote a letter to myself as to why I had to do this and gave it to my attorney so I could re-read this if I ever felt regret."
