SILVERDOCS Celebrates the Best in Non-Fiction

AFI's other festival, SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival concentrates solely on the art of documentary -- a genre that continues to gain momentum in the digital age. Now in its sixth year, SILVERDOCS, held at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center just outside Washington DC each June, is expanding in 2008 to eight days, June 16 to 23, reflecting popular interest.

"All of us at SILVERDOCS are proud to be a part of the amazing surge in audiences for documentary film. In 2008, we will be maintaining the quality, focus and intimacy of the Festival while offering our audiences more options to experience stellar documentaries and compelling programs," explains Festival Director Patricia Finneran.

Each year the Festival presents 100 of the best of the year's non-fiction filmmaking from around the globe. Selections in the past have included celebrated works from Martin Scorsese (THE LAST WALTZ), Werner Herzog (GRIZZLY MAN) and Michael Apted (49 UP) to the 2007 SILVERDOCS grand jury winner, PLEASE VOTE FOR ME, by director Weijun Chen, screening at AFI FEST 2007 in the International Documentary Competition. Past SILVERDOCS award winners include JESUS CAMP, BORN INTO BROTHELS, DARWIN'S NIGHTMARE, MY ARCHITECT and STREET FIGHT, all of which were nominated for Academy Awards.

SILVERDOCS is now accepting submissions. The Festival is seeking documentary features and shorts that demonstrate excellence in cinematic craft and innovation in storytelling. Filmmakers will compete for $50,000 in combined cash and in-kind prizes. The submission deadlines in 2008 are January 11 (early), February 15 (regular) and March 7 (late).
