A guide to AFI FEST for parents and kids

By MICHELLE PASTER, Daily News Managing Editor

AFI FEST 2007 presented by Audi's UNDER 18 GUIDE TO AFI FEST has tips for parents on what films at AFI FEST are appropriate for their middle- or high school-age movie fan.

Educators at the Skirball Cultural Center selected eight films after passing a rigorous evaluation.

AFI Screen Education Specialist Dorothy Mackendrick explains, "The Under 18 Guide is a way for young film buffs and their parents who want to go to AFI FEST, but who might be overwhelmed with choices, to find films that will be both interesting and appropriate for them to go to." It also lists any aspects of the film that some families might be uncomfortable with, like language or violence.

The guide, available at the AFI FEST Village, the Skirball Cultural Center, and at www.AFI.com/ AFIFEST, is a great way to see films from Israel, China, France, Iran, Puerto Rico, Iceland, and USA.

Of the eight films, two are world premieres, MANUELA Y MANUEL and SIGUR ROS; and two are US premieres, OPERATION FILMMAKER and CHOP SHOP.

Also in the line-up: THE BAND'S VISIT, JUNO, PLEASE VOTE FOR ME and PERSEPOLIS.

"The UNDER 18 GUIDE to AFI FEST is a great tool for parents and their teenagers wanting to get involved," says Mackendrick. "The film's descriptions can help you figure out what to watch and know you will have a great time."
