DAY EIGHT November 10, 2005

AFI FEST DAILY WRAP

compiled by Brent Simon

AFI FEST 2005 is a celebration of film first and foremost, but for at least one evening, music took center stage at the Festival... THE REFUGEE ALL STARS packed its World Premiere, and received a standing ovation afterwards... In what most certainly is a good sign for its theatrical future, there were a record number of buyers in attendance... Sierra Leonean musician/feature subjects from the film performed at the movie's after-party at The Loft at the Rooftop Village, again to raucous reception... DIRTY enjoyed its World Premiere with star Cuba Gooding Jr. and others in attendance, then picked up stakes for an after-party at NoHo hotspot La Poubelle, where the Black-Eyed Peas performed with DIRTY co-star Wyclef Jean, who was also in attendance... DJ Bobby Weeve was also on the ones and twos at said event... Elisabeth Shue was spotted ducking into the documentary THROUGH THE FIRE... The Mississippi Film Commission enjoyed a Happy Hour from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Cinema Lounge at the Rooftop Village... At the Q&A following its AFI bow, DIRTY director Christopher Fisher recounted his shoot as "24 days in a rainstorm," but maintained that it was worth it since the city of Los Angeles is the main character in his crime drama, about a crooked cop trying to change the direction of his life... Wyclef Jean, meanwhile, amusingly recalled the day he showed up two hours before call time... Just in advance of its World Premiere at AFI FEST, director Kim Yong-gyun's THE RED SHOES closed a deal with Tartan Films for North American distribution rights... Following its US Premiere at AFI FEST, Optimum Releasing announced the acquisition of all UK rights to Tommy Lee Jones' directorial debut, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, from EuropaCorp...
