Summary: At age fourteen, Bob Meredith is told by his father about sex and taken to tour several hospital wards filled with men being treated for sexual diseases. John Chamberlain and Edward Ralston, who both live in Bob's neighborhood, are not told about sex by their parents. Later, the three boys are engaged to girls they have known all their lives. When John learns that he has syphilis, he visits the celebrated Dr. Stone, who says that he can be cured in three to five years. Unwilling to wait, John goes to a quack, who bleeds him for a large fee and declares him cured. John prepares to marry, but Dr. Stone arrives at the wedding and stops it. Edward, who had evil companions in his youth, has lost his mind from masturbation. After he commits a crime during a sudden rage, an examining committee declares him insane. Bob, who attributes his well-being to his father's teaching at the right time, weds his sweetheart.

Note: The film was shot at the former Balboa studios in Long Beach, CA. The producers of the film asked for the assistance of state rights buyers and exhibitors in selecting a title. The Solitary Sin received more votes than all other titles combined. The production company, the New Art Film Co., should not be confused with a company of the same name which produced films starring Dorothy Gish in 1919 and 1920. The Solitary Sin was re-released under the titles T.N.T. (The Naked Truth) and The Naked Truth in 1924, at which time it was copyrighted by Public Welfare Pictures. Credits for producer Samuel Cummins and actor Emmett King were added based on information found on the re-released film.
