Summary:
Clarissa returns from boarding school and finds that her widowed father Cyrus Vane has married his young stenographer Gene. After overcoming her initial dislike for her stepmother, Clarissa becomes friends with Gene until one day when Clarissa catches her in the arms of Stephen Gambier, a young lawyer who had saved Gene from drowning. Cyrus also witnesses the embrace, and so, in order to spare her father further humiliation, Clarissa extracts a marriage proposal from the lawyer and introduces him to her father as her fiancé. Gambier tries to win Clarissa's love, but fails until Gene explains that the embrace was an innocent display of gratitude to the man who saved her life. Further complications arise when Gambier is accused of murdering his former benefactress, Mrs. Muir. Clarissa manages to secure proof of Gambier's innocence and saves his life.
