Summary:
In seventeenth century England, Nell Gwynne sells oranges outside of a London theater, hoping to become an actress. Meanwhile, Lady Olivia Vernon leaves her guardian, Lord Jeffreys, for her lover, Lord Fairfax, when Jeffreys arranges for an unsuitable marriage for her. Nell takes over for an ailing performer in a play and is an immediate success, then she uses her acting talents to help Olivia, whom she has befriended. She impersonates Jeffreys, who has imprisoned Fairfax, and orders the latter's release. Nell then pleads the lovers' case before King Charles II, who punishes Jeffreys. Finally, Nell becomes the King's mistress and founds a public hospital .
