Summary: Margaret Walsh's husband dies in a polar expedition and, still grieving for him, she marries a much older man, Morgan Delafield, a friend of her father. Some time later, Margaret falls in love with Stephen Bond, several years younger than she, but decides that she must not ruin her marriage. Nonetheless, gossip begins about Margaret and Stephen, and Morgan kills himself because of it. Stephen and Margaret marry, and as the years pass the age difference between them, at least to Margaret, increases. Stephen falls in love with a woman his own age, leaving Margaret as powerless and depressed as Morgan had been a decade before. Finally, like Morgan, Margaret commits suicide so Stephen can be with the woman he truly loves.
