ROCKY
United Artists, 1976
CAST Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith, Carl Weathers, Burt Young
DIRECTOR John G. Avildsen
PRODUCER Irwin Winkler, Robert Chartoff
SCREENWRITER Sylvester Stallone
This sleeper hit of 1977 starred a virtually unknown Sylvester Stallone in his first produced screenplay. Inspired to write the film after seeing the 1975 fight between World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali and underdog Chuck Wepner, Stallone was touched by Wepner's "stifled ambition and broken dreams," a major theme of the film. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture and went on to inspire five sequels, each starring Stallone. A statue of Rocky at the top of the steps of Philadelphia's Museum of Art continues to inspire fans who emulate the triumphant scene from the movie.
