FILMOCRACY
Initiator ITVS
Completion 2007
Description Independent Television Service (ITVS) produces, develops and markets a diverse array of films for Independent Lens on PBS. The goal of the ITVS “Filmocracy” project was to create a series of topical on-line film competitions where aspiring filmmakers would be encouraged to edit their films online, using pre-existing footage and other materials. With these tools readily available, the contests encourage and empower those with significantly less tech savvy than creative vision. The “Filmocracy” site gives contestants access to footage from KING CORN, a well-known documentary about agribusiness, and access to Eyespot, an in-browser editing tool. However, contestants are able to do more than simply edit together a short film using images from the film. The site also provides online tutorials with the makers of King Corn, including an in depth lesson in stop-motion animation, as well as music for editing, an application that allows participants to share their work via mobile devices and a forum for feedback before submitting the final edit of their films.
