FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, LOS ANGELES, CA, NOVEMBER 4, 2016 — The American Film Institute (AFI) today announced details for State of the Art Technology Showcase: Innovation and Immersive Storytelling, taking place at AFI FEST 2016 presented by Audi. Now in its third year as part of the festival, the two-day event will feature a selection of 360-degree, VR and immersive short film experiences representing a cross-section of what's currently possible in this new cinematic medium — and what's yet to come.
"There is a new generation of ambitious storytellers who are building innovative narratives, and worlds and immersive experiences with cutting-edge technology whose work we want to showcase at AFI FEST," said Jacqueline Lyanga, Director, AFI FEST. "We're going to be presenting work from creative leaders in the field, from companies like Dark Corner, Felix & Paul Studios, Google Spotlight Stories, Here Be Dragons, Oculus Story Studio, Penrose Studios, Wevr and more."
The Showcase will take place Saturday, November 12, and Sunday, November 13, throughout locations in The Hollywood Roosevelt, including the VIZIO Lounge, and will include panel discussions with leading artists, interactive installations and VR stations accessible to festival attendees for a hands-on experience of this latest technology. Admission to all panels and events is free for festival guests and pass holders. Individual tickets are available on the festival's mobile app and on AFI.com.

The Opening Night Gala will be the World Premiere of RULES DON'T APPLY (DIR Warren Beatty) on Thursday, November 10. Isabelle Huppert will be honored with a Tribute on Sunday, November 13, followed by a Centerpiece Gala screening of ELLE (DIR Paul Verhoeven). JACKIE (DIR Pablo Larraín) will screen as a Centerpiece Gala on Monday, November 14. LA LA LAND (DIR Damien Chazelle) will screen as a Centerpiece Gala on Tuesday, November 15. Annette Bening will be honored with a Tribute on Wednesday, November 16, followed by a Centerpiece Gala screening of 20TH CENTURY WOMEN (DIR Mike Mills). The Special Closing Night Gala Presentation will be PATRIOTS DAY (DIR Peter Berg) on Thursday, November 17.

In celebration of the 30th edition of the festival, a trio of diverse female trailblazers are featured in both the festival's 2016 key art and programming lineup. AFI FEST will spotlight Dorothy Dandridge, the first African American nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award®; Ida Lupino, a pioneering director, writer, producer and actress who became the first woman to direct a film noir; and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American actress to rise to international prominence.
AFI FEST takes place November 10–17, 2016, in the heart of Hollywood. Screenings, Galas and other events will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and The Hollywood Roosevelt. The full festival lineup and schedule will be unveiled in October.
