SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival
LIFE. Now Playing

Hailed by Screen International as "the preeminent US documentary Fest," SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival is quickly becoming the nation's most talked-about documentary film festival. This six-day event, featuring documentaries from around the world, is held each June just outside Washington, DC, at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The Festival was created through a unique alliance between the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel, and seeks to expand the audience for and broaden the impact of documentary film. SILVERDOCS celebrates the diversity of the documentary form and its power to engage audiences.

The Washington, DC, area is home to the most concentrated base of international policymakers, diplomats, producing organizations, world journalists, issue experts and activists on the planet. The AFI Silver Theatre's location puts SILVERDOCS in a unique position to bring together diverse and informed audiences to explore the art of documentary filmmaking and examine the content revealed by these real-life stories.

Last year, SILVERDOCS featured 89 films, selected from over 1,320 submissions and over 15,000 visitors attended from 89 countries. The Festival included seven world premieres and six North American premieres.

Highlights from last year include DARWIN'S NIGHTMARE (2005 Sterling Award winner), GRIZZLY MAN, THE ARISTOCRATS, BOYS OF BARAKA, MURDERBALL, OFF TO WAR, STREET FIGHT and FAVELA RISING. Special guests at the Festival included Time Magazine's Matt Cooper, Richard Dreyfuss, Gilbert Gottfried, Werner Herzog, Joel Siegel, Penelope Spheeris, John Podesta, Fred Willard and the members of Sweet Honey in the Rock.
